Everything on this page is from the Cathedral’s The Gift by Luxmuralis event page and its Christmas music and concerts page, both read on 5 October 2026.
What it is
Luxmuralis is the sculptor Peter Walker and the composer David Harper, who project light and sound installations in cathedrals, abbeys and castles around the UK. The Gift is their Christmas show. The Cathedral describes a walk through the building past projected festive scenes, stained glass imagery on the vaulted ceilings and scenes from the Christmas story, set to music composed for the show. It is billed as suitable for all ages.
The event is sponsored by the Winchester law firm Paris Smith.
Tickets and times
| Ticket | Price |
|---|---|
| Adult | from £12 |
| Child, 3 to 16 | £8 |
| Family, 2 adults and up to 3 children | £36 |
Each night has 11 entry slots: 6.30pm, then every 15 minutes to 9pm. The Cathedral lists the event as running “6:30pm to 9pm”, so a 9pm slot appears to be the last entry rather than the closing time; the Cathedral has not said how long a visit takes. The adult price is “from £12”, which suggests some slots or ticket types cost more.
On 5 October the first slot of the night had already sold out on two dates:
- Wednesday 16 December, 6.30pm
- Saturday 19 December, 6.30pm
Every other slot on all six nights was still showing “Book now”. The early slots and the Saturday are going first, so book soon if you want a particular evening.
Access and practical points
From the Cathedral’s accessibility notes for the show:
- Steps: the route goes around the Cathedral and includes steps up and down in places. A ramp and a wheelchair lift will be in place, run by a trained steward.
- Light sensitivity: the show may not suit visitors who are sensitive to flashing or moving light.
- Prams and buggies: there is a storage area at the entrance, at owners’ risk.
- Questions: cathedral.office@winchester-cathedral.org.uk.
Pairing it with the Christmas market
The show runs in the last week of the Cathedral Christmas market in the Close. The market’s own hours are 10am to 6pm Sunday to Thursday and 10am to 8pm on Friday and Saturday, so on Monday 14 to Thursday 17 December the chalets will be shut before your slot. On Friday 18 and Saturday 19 December the market is open until 8pm, which lets you do both, though those are also the busiest nights in the Close.
The Cathedral’s choir sings its free Chamber Choir Christmas Concert at noon on Saturday 19 December, and the carol services follow on 20, 21 and 23 December.
Getting there
Park and ride will not get you home. Winchester City Council’s park and ride FAQs say the last buses leave the town centre around 7.30pm on weekdays and around 6.30pm on Saturdays, before most of the show’s slots finish. Drive to a city car park instead or come by train. Our parking in Winchester page has the car parks and the new charges from 1 November, and the roadworks page lists anything closing roads in December. For late trains, see our Christmas train times.
Still to be confirmed
- How long the walk-through takes, and whether there is a premium ticket behind the “from £12”.
This page will be updated as slots sell out and in the week of the show.
